While all school districts use different criteria for admitting students into their gifted/talented programs, many school districts are using group IQ tests to identify children’s need for gifted education. These tests have some advantages and also some inherent problems.
When compared to individually-administered tests, group IQ tests are extremely time efficient as well as cost efficient. They can be given to many kids at once in a classroom setting, and can be administered by a teacher or teacher’s aide. Sometimes kids who don’t do well at school because they’re bored or have learning problems will do surprisingly well on group IQ tests. In these cases, group IQ tests can be helpful tools for preliminary screening for giftedness.
However, individually administered IQ tests give the examiner the opportunity to consider individual differences in response styles, or the reason a child might have for making a mistake. Individually administered IQ tests can provide information on a child’s attitude, learning problems or strengths, or how these come together; all of which are critical to making an informed decision regarding appropriate placement in a program.
Diagnostic Learning Services offers individually administered IQ and achievement tests that have high ceilings, which means students go as far as they can. Their performance is compared with peers their same age or grade and specific areas of strength can be found. Individual recommendations are made based on the results of the assessment so that each student has an opportunity to be challenged to their potential and beyond.
Diagnostic Learning Services offers individually administered IQ and achievement tests that can show specific areas of giftedness. In addition, we will use the assessment information to makes relevant recommendations for both school and home. Call today for more information about our assessment process.
