Welcome to Let’s Talk Learning Disabilities with Laurie Peterson and Abbey Weinstein. Laurie & Abbey spend their days talking about dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. They talk to parents of struggling students and adults who have had a lifetime of academic challenges. In Episode 01 Laurie & Abbey unpack the unknowns behind dyslexia and what it looks like to seek testing, receive diagnosis and how to advocate for yourself or a loved one. Laurie & Abbey discuss common occurrences in testing at the right age and ruling out all other possible learning distractions before finding a good dyslexia program.
Episode 02 – Dyslexia Therapist, Melanie Florsheim
In Episode 02 Laurie & friend Melanie discuss what it looks like to be screened and diagnosed with dyslexia and what you can expect from therapy and the education system. Melanie is a dyslexia therapist who has opened her own private practice and speaks to the advice she gives to individuals and family members.
Episode 03 – ADHD
In Episode 03 Laurie and Abbey share about their own experiences with ADHD. They touch on their personal challenges with having ADHD, as well as experiences with clients, friends and family members who have ADHD as well. They also share about how ADHD testing, treatment and stigmas have changed over the years.

Episode 06 – Visual Processing
In this Episode, Laurie and Abbey introduce visual processing disorders and the chief complaints they encounter when working with visual processing challenges. Many times, visual processing disorders are mistaken for other learning disorders, before ultimately finding the correct treatment needed. In the following episode, we’ll be joined by a visual processing specialist who has experience with patients that have visual processing disorders.
Episode 07 – Visual Processing Disorders Expert, Dr. Charles Shidlofsky
In this Episode, Laurie interviews Dr. Charles Shidlofsky, or Dr. S as she knows him. Dr. S runs Neuro Vision Associates of North Texas and shares how visual processing disorders are diagnosed, what to look for, how they are treated, and how vision therapy can also be used outside visual processing disorders.
Episode 08 – Section 504
In this Episode, Laurie and Abbey talk about section 504 accommodations, what they are and how to get access to these accommodations. They share what it looks like to prove that these accommodations could be helpful, and develop an individual accommodation plan.
Episode 09 – Special Education
In this Episode, Laurie and Abbey follow up their previous discussion on 504 accommodations, and dive deeper into the world of special education. They discuss the guidelines, laws, qualification processes, as well as the benefits and downsides to special education.
Episode 10 – Dysgraphia
In this Episode, Laurie and Abbey share about the topic of dysgraphia. They discuss ways to recognize it, provide insight into typical accommodations available, and offer practical resources to help those who are diagnosed.
Episode 11 – Processing Issues
In this Episode, Laurie and Abbey bring together many of the previous episodes as they address processing issues. While it may be a generic term, they realize that many approaches can be applied to multiple processing issues.
Episode 12 – Integrative Medicine
In this Episode, Laurie and Abbey speak with their friend, Christie, an integrated medicine provider about a holistic approach to treating common conditions. Christie is a nurse practitioner with Natural Choice Pediatrics in Frisco, TX.
